On 1st December 2018, MyNewsGh.com broke news of a Ghanaian young man, Addo Kwabla-Evans who revealed that blood he bought from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Blood bank was discovered to contain Syphillis and was HIV positive.
TheNewsGH.com has learnt the blood was bought from the hospital’s blood bank and tested at a private facility in Kumasi, Kean Health Center. Consequently, a five member committee was put together by the Health ministry with CID assistance to investigate the matter.
The Five-Member Independent Committee, set up by the Ministry of Health to investigate allegations of blood contamination from the Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) debunked the accusation.
The Committee concluded that detailed laboratory investigations conducted on the same blood units in contention by an independent private Lab, showed that the product did not contain any HIV pathogen or effective organisms that could cause Syphilis.
Dr Oheneba Owusu-Danso, the Chief Executive Officer of the Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, who presented the report to Mr Kwaku Agyeman Manu, Minister of Health, in Accra on Friday, stated the highlights of the bulky Report.
He assured the public that the hospital had the best of laboratory equipment’s for the best outcomes, and stressed that all blood and its products from the facility were very safe for use.
But the young man at the center Addo Kwabla Evans is making allegations of a possible cover up of the damning situation under a national Security imperative.
Speaking exclusively to MyNewsGh.com, he said the blood samples were possibly swapped and testimonies of key witnesses including himself and his sick mother were not taken by the “fake committee” who he said attempted to use police to intimidate and blackmail him into recanting. He said the Committee also used the influence of the police and the Medical Council to bully the officials of the Hospitals who conducted th test which established there was HIV AIDS in the first blood.
“They are now saying the hospital was operating without licence so their test is questionable. The doctor who signed the test results that the blood was positive, is he not in good standing? They have resorted to bullying tactics against the officials.”
“I will organize a Press Conference soon to speak about the real issues and the cover up. This is a window-dressing committee”.
He explained why he will in the coming days examine his legal options.
