The Youth Chief (Mmrantehene) of Aburi in the Akuapem South Municpality of the Eastern region has disclosed that about sixty percent (60%) of the youths are engaging in the abuse of illicit drugs.
Nana Osae Bempo I attributed the situation to the high rate of unemployment in the area since ‘the devil finds work for an idle man’ and therefore appealed to the government to create job opportunities for the youths in the country especially in his juridiction.
In an interview on Nsawam-based Fawe Fm’s mid-day news dubbed Fawe Deep News Tuesday, Feb 19, 2019, the Youth Chief said due to the engagement and the abuse of illicit drugs by some of the youths,the rate of social vices is high.
According to him, the police intervened by arresting about ninety-six of the youths engaing in the illicit drugs last year with subsquent prosecution and a signing of bond to exbit good behaviour.
He said the intervention of the police and the government compelled majority of the youths engaging in the abuse of illicit drugs to desist from.
Nana Bempo said the situation has worsened comparing the rate of social vices pepertrated by the youths who abuse illicit drugs in the area this year.
Describing the situation as worrying, he called on the police to crack the whip on those engaging and abusing illicit drugs as done last year.
“Smoking is rampant in Aburi. Ladies are among those who smoke wee.About 60% of the youths engage in the smoking of wee, this is because there are no jobs in the area. They engage in stealing after smoking the wee.If you try to advise them to desist from smoking and stealing, you become their worst enemy. Myself togerther with my brother was nearly bucthered by a youth who smokes wee and steals as well after we attempted to advised him”, the chief said during an interviews with Fawe Fm’s news anchor, Odiasempa Kofi Boadi.
