Some residents along the Awoshie-Ablekuma-Pokuase stretch in Accra have bared their teeth out at authorities over failure to fix traffic signals on the highway.
According to the hundreds of residents, they are overwhelmed with the high spate of accidents and loss of lives on the road due to the absence of functioning traffic lights.
Speaking to the media, these protestors said their decision to demonstrate is borne out of the sheer negligence of the authorities and especially the MP to attend to their pressing needs.
“The cars have been killing our children and people who cross. Just on Monday, a chld was knocked down by another car and that is why we are demanding that the traffic lights on our roads are fixed as soon as possible,” an angry resident retorted.
In unison, they declared their intentions not to partake in the general elections if their roads are not fixed with proper and functioning traffic signals to regulate the movement of vehicles and pedestrians.
A protest that began in the morning on a quiet note took a drastic turn when these protesters decided to block the major roads as they burn car tyres amidst chants and hues of displeasure.
Following that the police had to be called to intervene to curtail the further destruction of properties and lives. Also, the police were present to ensure that innocent commuters are allowed to move irrespective of the demonstration.
Recalcitrant residents who despite the presence of the police were adamant were dealt with by the security forces who issued some arrests and forcefully prevented the mob from taking over the road.
The drama continued for a while but the residents were unflinching in their desire to have their road fixed since they can not continue to see cars knocking down pedestrians on the regular.
The presence of the military and the police have been beefed up to restore calm and tranquillity to Awoshie and lots environs.
