The flagbearer of the NDC, John Mahama has said he has no plans of cancelling the Free SHS policy that was introduced by the current administration.
According to the former president, any news or rumour that suggest that he is going to cancel the Free SHS policy should be disregarded.
In a tweet, Mahama said his only concern about the policy is how it was not implemented properly and in effect created an additional burden on parents.
Free SHS has come to stay. If anyone comes to you that I, John Mahama, the son of E.A. Mahama is going to cancel FREE SHS, tell that person he or she is a bloody liar. What I am against is the poor implementation that has put a lot of burden of parents.
In the lead up to the 2016 elections, the NDC said the Free SHS policy which the NPP professed at that time was not feasible and doable.
However, President Akufo-Addo upon assumption of office in 2017 implemented the policy outright although it later came with the double-track system to contain the high number of students.
Meanwhile, the NDC then said the Free SHS policy must not be implemented on wholesale but rather progressively so to start with the Day students and then move on to the Boarding students.
Well, the NPP has gone ahead to implement it and John Mahama has promised never to see it cancelled but look for better ways to implement it if he should win the elections in December.
